LIST OF KEY TERMS

Competitive Swimwear

Swimwear designed for training or racing, typically shaped by performance needs such as fit, compression, movement, durability, and drag reduction. In this project, competitive swimwear is also studied as a visual and cultural object.

Color Palette

A selected group of colors used in a design. Color palettes can shape how a print feels, such as bold, playful, calm, powerful, feminine, athletic, or energetic.

Surface Design

We combine a thoughtful, human-centered approach with clear communication and reliable results. It’s not just what we do—it’s how we do it that sets us apart.

Pattern

An organized arrangement of visual elements, often repeated across a surface. Patterns can be geometric, organic, abstract, symbolic, or representational.

Motif

A repeated visual element or symbol used within a pattern or design. Motifs may include stars, florals, waves, marine life, geometric forms, or abstract shapes.

Print

A surface design applied to fabric or another material. In swimwear, prints often appear as repeated patterns that cover the garment.

Design Research

A research process that uses design methods, materials, and visual outcomes to investigate a question. In this project, surveys, visual analysis, motif development, and print design are all part of the research process.

Public Scholarship

Academic work created for audiences beyond the university. This website and exhibition are forms of public scholarship because they share research with swimmers, families, coaches, educators, designers, and the broader public.

Textile Design

The creation of patterns, surfaces, structures, and materials for fabric. Swimwear textile design must consider both visual expression and performance conditions.
